Flowers, Needlework and More
Every time I read something, draw, paint, write or take photographs, I am probing the present world around me. In the studio, works arise from my involvement with today’s interpersonal and public life. The works may be based on my immediate environment, but alternatively they may arise from universele or global themes. I make little models, design in textile, do carpentry and make assemblages of the materials I have accumulated. An object, a multimedia installation and often audio and/or video work may emerge from this proces. It is an approach that alternates with drawing and painting. Language and text also play a part in my work, in either a written or oral form. Incidentally, I do audio and other performances.
Elements that refer to landscape, living situations, travelling, stories, the city, history, rituals, the perceptiën of our environment and human action may all figure as visual resources in my 2, 3 and 4 dimensional work. I am especially interested in human behaviour. The basic motives of human action have remained unchanged through the ages, yet historical and cultural social factors have a considerable influence on how people relate to one another. Scientific developments and new outlooks on communications, the human brain and nature also have their impact.
I may incorporate these themes by representing them, or by displaying a literal action. Alternatively, I may adopt a Visual language that reflects on the themes in a free, associative, philosophical and poetic way. The works poises in the force field between the analytical and the narrative. This is how I present my outlook on, and my concern for, today’s world.
