Jacques van_Erven
Painters
6 september till 19 oktober.
After a period of flowerpaintings he began to paint vegetables. Not such a special genre as flowers. Just ordinary vegetables we know from our own kitchen. With these pictures Jacques van Erven opened our eyes. By his angles, the sizes he used, the croppings and especially his way of painting, he showed us with these tempera pieces the secret life, the unexpected dimensions of his and our vegetables.
That’s the way art should be. Asking attention for the things we too easily disregard.
After the vegetables there are the rotting tree trunks, branches, stumps, leaves and mosses.
The themes succeeding each other become evidently the phases of a life cycle. The constant factor in this development is the particular way in which things within the limitations of the canvas obtain multiple meaning. Details in nature become full worlds in the paintings.”
(By now the theme of flowers has returned in Jacques van Erven’s paintings.)
