Hans van der Weijden
September 09 till Oktober 13 2007
The artist Hans van der Weijden makes caskets, lockers and objects in zinc. They have a weather-beaten appearance, like an archaeological treasure gnawed at by the ravages of time, and are decorated with all kinds of tiny ornaments, which have sometimes been arranged like a relic behind a little window. These little ornaments consist of shells, stones, feathers, twigs, lobster-tails collected during travels and of ordinary daily objects such as a little nail, a piece of string, a little ribbon, a folded note or a little bead.
They convert the zinc object into a precious trinket, a treasure-chest, something religious of great emotional value.
Because of the little drawings, maps and texts that are no longer legible to others, these objects take on a mysterious and fairy-like magic, from which every man for himself can construe his own story.
